Highlight on Meinklang Winery of Austria
/What I love the most about wine is how a glass of wine can transport you to experience a particular area or region, whether you have the ability to visit there or not. Wine offers a unique way to experience a particular region of the world, as each bottle reflects the land, climate, and traditions of its origin. This connection is rooted in the concept of terroir, a French term that encompasses the environmental factors that influence the character of a wine—such as soil composition, topography, weather patterns, and even the local farming practices. Terroir shapes the flavor profile, aroma, and texture of the wine, making a Pinot Noir from Burgundy taste distinct from one grown in Oregon or New Zealand. Through terroir, wine becomes more than a beverage—it becomes a sensory passport to a specific place, offering a taste of its natural landscape and cultural identity with every sip.
Enter Meinklang winery in Austria. This winery has become a favorite of mine personally for several reasons. First and foremost, I am hard pressed to find a wine from Austria that I have not enjoyed. The region brings forth a mineral driven flavor profile in wine that is refreshing and energetic, in both red and white wines. Meinklang is a family-owned winery in Austria’s Burgenland region that beautifully blends traditional farming with modern natural winemaking. Situated on a biodynamic farm near the Hungarian border, Meinklang treats its vineyards as part of a larger ecosystem, complete with cattle, fruit orchards, and ancient grains. Their wines are known for being vibrant, unfiltered, and full of character—expressing the purest essence of the land and the family’s deep respect for nature. With each sip you can pick up on some aspect of the biodyversity of the area - wild grasses, flowers, fruits and vegetables. All enhance the experience and the quality of the wine and truly transport you to their little parcel on earth.
Meinklang Gruner Veltliner - A delicious, unoaked Grüner Veltliner that's too good to pass up. The Meinklang winery and mixed farm is set in the National Park Neusiedlersee in Burgenland. To say that this is a special place hardly describes the reality of the land.
This wine is some of the best valued, quality wine on the market today. This Gruner shows itself in a playful manner oozing with minerality, lean green fruits, herbal and white pepper knows. It is quite the versatile pairing. It has a short aging in steel and spends a bit of time on its lees.
Meinklang Burgenland Red - A lighter, fresh style of red made from 60% Zweigelt, 30% Blaufrankisch, and 10% St. Laurent made with carbonic maceration preserving all the fresh juciness and bright red fruit flavors. Brambly berries, black currant, and cranberry with anise seed and leafy tomato vine.
You can try these and other great wines on the shelves here at Meza! Cheers!
